We always need helpers backstage, the panto couldn't function without them!  There are specific roles such as Stage Manager, lighting, sound, make-up and props which are worth items in their own right.  In addition there are general helpers backstage who:

Attend rehearsals to figure out what is required / rehearse scene changes
Help put togther and take down the stage
Shift scenery and props during the later rehearsal and shows
Help ensure everybody is safe backstage
Eat chocolate
